MAKAUT (Formerly known as West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT)) came into existence on the recommendation of an expert committee set up on December 31st, 2008, by the Government of West Bengal under the chairmanship of Mr. Ashesh Prasad Mitra, an eminent scientist. The University formally began operations on January 15, 2001, following the promulgation of the West Bengal University of Technology Act, 2000, under the West Bengal Act XV of 2000. The primary objective of WBUT is to organize undergraduate courses in sciences, engineering, technology, and management education to produce high-caliber scientists, technologists, and managers capable of contributing to industrial development. The University also aims to develop Centres of Excellence for higher studies and research in these areas.
Some important missions of MAKAUT are:
Facilitate distance education for students and continuing education programs to update knowledge and skills of working professionals. Create awareness in key areas such as environmental science, conservation of energy and resources, and emerging technologies. Additionally, offer consultancy services to industries and other organizations.
